Do you have a good working knowledge of Geographical Information Systems (GIS)? If so, this position may be for you. The Government of Alberta, Planning and Program Management within Transportation is currently looking for GIS Technologists to join their busy team in Edmonton. Reporting to the GIS Specialist, the GIS Technologist is primarily to support digital transformation and data intelligence through collection, administration and dissemination of spatial data, mapping, surveying and imagery products. The incumbent will provide technical expertise to compile data collection programs, liaises with data collection vendors to ensure project requirements are understood and monitors and evaluates the performance of vendors and engineering consultants. The GIS Technologist is also responsible for documenting vendor progress on an integrated data collection contract or standalone contract as well as maintaining day-to-day project communications.

The main responsibilities for the GIS Technologist are (but not limited to):

  • Collect, review, validate and manage datasets that support the transformation to digital government through the provision of reliable data about the transportation network
  • Liaise with other department business areas to gather data requirements
  • Update GIS with the latest field data collection that shows changes to the transportation network
  • Perform project management and data verification for specialized scoped projects.



  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Diploma supplemented by at least 2 years of progressively responsible experience in Transportation related GIS and/or data management

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education


  • Project management for effective delivery of data products
  • Experience in performing data centered techniques
  • Provide expertise and knowledge transfer in data collection methods and upkeep of the GIS

$2,240.65 - $2,934.53 bi-weekly ($58,480.00 - $77,374.00 annually)
