POSITION SUMMARY

We have an exciting opportunity available in our Technologies division in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, for an R&D Professional. In this position, key accountabilities will be designing laboratory experiments, providing direction to technical staff assigned to conduct experiments, and coordinating, interpreting and reporting on experimental results in support of Technologies division's objectives and business plan.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Prepare laboratory test plans, prescribe test work conducted by the technical staff, and prepare written and oral technical reports describing the details and commercial implications of the test work results, to enable improvements to Sherritt’s metal producing divisions in operating practices, strategies, flowsheets and quality of products, and to enable design of new processing facilities for Sherritt’s metal producing divisions, new operations and external clients.
  • Contribute to the planning, operation and reporting of pilot plant tests and commercial plant trials.
  • Contribute to the preparation of process design criteria, process descriptions, operating manuals, test procedures, EH&S practices and training documents.
  • Control costs and meet customer expectations by preparing written scopes of work, schedules and cost estimates for approval prior to provision of services, and providing these services within the agreed schedules and costs.
  • Enhance personal knowledge of the industry by keeping up-to-date with relevant technical literature.
  • Identify innovative value adding opportunities, and contribute to the development of new processes, products, services and technologies.
  • Be aware, understand and consistently comply with all HSE and Emergency Response Policies, Procedures and associated documentation.
  • Exercise judgment at all times and apply best efforts to complete deliverables.
  • Make problems visible by using available data to demonstrate improvement opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Advanced degree in chemistry or other physical sciences, or chemical or metallurgical engineering, or 5 years of research experience equivalent to post-graduate work in one of these areas.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Chemist (P.Chem.).
  • Working knowledge of commercial hydrometallurgical or petrochemical processes.
  • 5+ years of experience in conducting test work in a research laboratory or testing facility.

This is a permanent, full-time position. Sherritt offers a competitive compensation ($100,000 - 110,000), comprehensive benefits, an annual performance-based incentive award, and provides the opportunity for personal growth and development. Language of work: English.
