Job Summary:

Reporting to the Communications Director, as part of the Retail Customer Communications Team, the Strategic Communications Lead will work closely with key stakeholders and senior executives to develop and execute external communications strategy, messaging, and planning for customers in Canada, which include pharmacies, hospitals and other healthcare institutions.

The Strategic Communications Lead will own the development of key content solutions that create awareness, engagement, and establishes McKesson Canada as a thought leader in the pharmaceutical industry in Canada.

The role is suited for a leader with a passion to drive and execute concise, informative communications in a timely manner, who is accustomed to leveraging their professional expertise to resolve complex situations in creative and effective ways.


  • Exciting opportunity to create, own and execute impactful strategy, content and messaging to external audiences across a variety of channels. Ensure projects are completed as defined within the approved scope, on time, and within budget.

  • Serve as the retail customer communications prime for all regional projects, programs, and tactical B2B customer communications, within a defined geographical region.

  • Immersed in daily operations of the business, the Lead will partner with cross-functional teams to own customer communications planning efforts in conjunction with Sales Operations and Customer Care teams. Strengthen the communications skills and capacity of internal team members to ensure consistency across the organization.

  • Act as the subject matter expert for regional stakeholders, providing strategic communications advice, and proactively engage in regular dialogue with business leaders to maintain an understanding of the current environment, challenges, support requirements; and provide creative solutions.

  • Lead the content creation and communication engagement for regional customer events in collaboration with our Sr. Events Advisor and the Corporate Communications Events team. Facilitate and support a variety of content to support business leaders at regional industry events and tradeshows including creation of presentations, speaking notes, etc.

  • Assumes editorial ownership of the Medicine Shoppe retail pharmacy publication that provides our franchise owners with important and exclusive updates on product offerings, service impacts, education, regulatory changes, and industry news.

  • Responsibility for contributing to positive regional narratives through the use of digital/social media, channels by working collaboratively with channel owners (Marketing & Corporate Communications) to highlight good news stories for their region.

  • Champion the McKesson brand for all communications initiatives. Ensure proper and consistent positioning of the organization and its strategic priorities with regional stakeholders. Identify opportunities to engage with customers and members to strengthen the brand and instill a culture of positive, open communications.

  • Measure, analyze, and report on the performance of regional communications initiatives; continually monitor metrics, adjusting messaging to maximize impact and effectiveness when needed.


  • Relevant education in Communications, Marketing or a related discipline.

  • Superior English communication skills (written, verbal, editing) required.

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience developing, implementing, and leading communications or marketing communications strategies, preferably for a large organization within the retail, healthcare, or pharmaceutical industry.

  • Healthcare landscape, pharmacy knowledge or experience in a regulated environment is a strength.

  • Experience in B2B Communications is a strength.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, Marketo, Salesforce, Smartsheet, Mailchimp, and other communication tools an asset.

  • Strong self-directed initiative, resourcefulness, and drive for innovation.

  • Strategic thinker, strong customer-centric ethic, coupled with a keen sense of the big picture.

  • Creative, out-of-the box thinking; willingness to learn and try new things.

  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, supported by a high degree of enthusiasm, creativity, interpersonal skills, and entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Excellent executive presence, ability to persuade others, cultivate positive relationships with cross-functional internal and external customers and executive leaders.

  • Highly effective project management, prioritization, multi-tasking, and time management skills to meet deadlines.

  • Work is produced accurately, with a high level of quality and attention to detail.

  • Mindset of continuous improvement and desire to contribute.

As part of Total Rewards, we are proud to offer a competitive compensation package at McKesson. This is determined by several factors, including performance, experience and skills, equity, regular job market evaluations, and geographical markets. In addition to base pay, other compensation, such as an annual bonus or long-term incentive opportunities may be offered.

Our Base Pay Range for this position

$82,800 - $138,000
