This posting is for current and upcoming opportunities, the work will normally be performed on Night shifts with Thursday/Friday off-days or Night shifts with Saturday/Sunday as off days or Sunset shifts with Friday/Saturday/Sunday as off days; however, start-times and off-days may vary as directed by management.

The primary work location will be Greenwood or McCowan or Dundas West Shop, however reporting locations will vary as dictated by work assignments.

The Trainees will be required to work various shifts as part of the 3-year training period to allow exposure to various aspects of the work, and afford the opportunity to work with accomplished welders.


  • Receive training and instruction for varied and moderately complex electric welding and acetylene cutting and the operations of various grinding equipment
  • Rebuilding worn rail heads, guard rail on curves, special trackwork, frogs, and switch points, etc.
  • Performing thermite welding of rail ends, monitoring of electric flash butt welding activities, cald welding and 500 MCM bonding
  • Welding ring bonds, equaliser bonds and cross bonds to tangent or special trackwork joints
  • Using various bonding processes
  • Performing acetylene cutting work as required
  • Performing general emergency work such as freeing frozen track, switches and mechanisms, and making temporary repairs to defective rail joints, etc.
  • Operating a truck in order to transport tools, materials and personnel to work sites
  • Required to work various shifts as part of the 3-year training period to allow exposure to various facets of the work and afford the opportunity to work with accomplished welders on various crews.

  • Training normally obtained through completion of Grade 12 education, technical programs, or the equivalent, as defined by the TTC’s Training Department’s guidelines for the assessment of Grade 12 technical program
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and published operating/safety rules and regulations
  • Must have a valid class “G” province of Ontario driver’s licence, or better, and pass the written and practical tests required for a class “DZ” driver’s licence
  • The successful candidate will be classified as a Track Welder Trainee for a period of up to 3 years, during which time the applicable training will be provided
  • Must be able to attend and successfully complete all portions of the training to sustain the trainee status
  • The successful candidate will be locked into the Track Welder Trainee position for a period of 3 years and will not be entitled to bid for job vacancies or participate in Master Sign-ups or Bumps until the completion of the 3-year training period
  • Upon successful completion of the classroom and the on-the-job training has been obtained, the candidate will be classified as a Track Welder in wage group 8 and must remain in the classification for a period of 18 months with the ability to bid to higher classifications during this period, as per the Maintenance Seniority Regulations
